Renewing Your Vows in Mexico

The Basics

Beaches, Spanish colonial architecture, lush gardens, and ancient pyramids can provide distinctive backdrops for a vow renewal. Along the Yucatan coast, the Caribbean Sea laps long stretches of beach and offshore islands such as Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. Inland, the architecture of smaller cities such as Merida and San Miguel de Allende harkens back to Spain. The Pacific Coast is dotted with resort towns and fishing villages. And at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is home to some of country’s most glamorous resorts.

Wherever you choose to renew vows, it can be romantic to incorporate elements of Mexico’s indigenous and Spanish Colonial cultures and colorful crafts. A sweet Mexican wedding custom often used in vow renewals involves creating a figure-eight around the bride’s and groom’s necks with a lazo, a circular chain, to signify that a couple is linked for eternity. Also fun: hiring a mariachi band to play after a vow exchange (the word mariachi is said to be derived from the French word for marriage).
